About this job

Role Summary

The Director, Contract Enablement is a senior individual contributor within the US Market Access Institutional Contracting organization, responsible for the operating model and processes that underpin how institutional contracts are developed, negotiated, and executed. This role designs and continuously improves the processes, governance frameworks, tools, and ways of working that enable the Contract Strategy team and Development to operate efficiently and at scale across institutional customer segments, including Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs), hospitals, alternate sites of care, trade, and specialty infusion customers. The role co-designs contract and rebate programs in partnership with the Business Unit, translating program direction into scalable, executable contracting structures.

The Director partners with Contract Management, Contract and Rebate Operations, Account Management, Business Unit, Government Pricing, Legal, Digital, and other cross-functional stakeholders to build and maintain the operating model, workflows, templates, and performance metrics that drive consistency, compliance, and speed across the contracting lifecycle. The role's focus is on how contracting work gets done — designing scalable processes, prioritization frameworks, and resourcing approaches.

Role Responsibilities

Operational Enablement & Process Design

  • Co-design contract and rebate programs with the Business Unit, pressure-testing proposed deal terms for operational feasibility and value — confirming systems, data, and processes can administer the contract as written and that incremental operational costs are justified by deal value.
  • Partner with Business Unit leadership on proposed deal structures, surfacing operational cost, risk exposure, and alternative approaches to support sound decision-making.
  • Own the end-to-end operating model for Contract Execution and Development, including intake, prioritization, resourcing, and escalation frameworks across the contracting lifecycle.
  • Translate business priorities, portfolio growth plans, and market dynamics into operational plans and capacity strategies that ensure Contract Execution and Development can execute at the required pace and scale.
  • Lead the design and governance of contract templates, standard clauses, and process documentation, ensuring consistency and compliance across customer segments.
  • Identify and monitor operational risks and process gaps across institutional contracting — including IDNs, GPOs, regional aggregations, alternate sites of care, and trade — and recommend mitigation approaches.
  • Partner with Brand, Account Management, and Finance to understand the customer dynamics and performance goals driving each deal request, and document business requirements, deal intent, and agreed parameters in a standardized form for Legal and Operations.

Contract Development & Execution Support

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Business Unit and Contracting, Legal, Government Pricing, and Contract and Rebate Operations, translating commercial objectives into executable, negotiated contract language for assigned institutional customers — authoring or guiding the development of contract language as needed.
  • Vet proposed deal structures with Legal early in the design process — flagging regulatory, antitrust, and government pricing considerations — and provide Contract Development with clear drafting direction, business rationale, and commercial intent.
  • Support the drafting, negotiation, and execution of high-value, highly complex agreements, serving as the senior operational resource for the organization's most complex, highest-value customer relationships.
  • Review draft agreements and amendments for alignment to business intent, flagging language that creates ambiguity or unenforceable obligations.
  • Develop and maintain standardized value summaries, contract narratives, and submission frameworks that improve the efficiency and consistency of institutional responses.

Data, Analytics & Performance Management

  • Build and maintain the analytical and reporting frameworks used to measure operational performance — cycle times, throughput, contract compliance, and post-submission win/loss reviews — translating findings into systematic process improvements.
  • Lead the early-risk identification framework, converting cross-functional input from Contract Management, Contract and Rebate Operations, Account Management, Government Pricing, and Legal into executive-level risk recommendations.
  • Lead assessment of the impact of evolving healthcare laws and regulations on operational processes and templates, recommending enterprise-wide updates.

Technology & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead evaluation and adoption of contracting platforms, tools, and Digital/AI capabilities — owning the operational roadmap and using these tools to monitor contract pull-through and surface performance insights that inform program design and negotiation posture.
  • Identify and lead opportunities for automation, process redesign, and program reimagination that improve the speed, consistency, and quality of contracting operations.
  • Serve as a senior operational enablement expert and mentor for Institutional Contracting colleagues, setting the standard for how the function operates.

Cross-Functional Partnership & Governance

  • Advise and influence Business Unit partners, Account Management, and Contracting on operating model design, process improvement, and their business implications.
  • Provide the Business Unit with insight into operational efficiencies, cycle-time reduction, and standardization opportunities that lower the cost to contract and shorten time to revenue — including identifying and quantifying opportunities to reduce contract leakage, recover unrealized value, and improve margin through better deal structure and governance.
  • Build and maintain strong, productive relationships across Account Management, Legal, Compliance, and Contract and Rebate Operations, coordinating to ensure operational feasibility and consistent execution of contracting processes.
  • Lead efforts to ensure all contracting processes, templates, and agreements comply with legal, regulatory, and company policy requirements, partnering with Legal as needed.

Here Is What You Need (Minimum Requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 8 years of experience; OR a Master's degree with at least 7 years of experience; OR a PhD with 5+ years of experience.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical, institutional contracting, contract operations, process design, or market access.
  • Experience working with GPOs, IDNs, hospitals, alternate sites of care, trade, and retail customers.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and governing operational processes, workflows, or governance frameworks at scale.
  • Expert-level knowledge of contract drafting, agreement language, and industry-standard contracting terms.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading governance frameworks, driving cross-functional initiatives, and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated strengths in operational enablement, risk assessment, analytical thinking, problem solving, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

Bonus Points If You Have (Preferred Requirements)

  • Paralegal degree, MS, or MBA preferred but not required.
  • Process improvement certification (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) or experience with operational excellence methodologies.
  • Experience with Buy and Bill in institutional settings.
  • Familiarity with digital contracting tools, analytics platforms, or workflow automation technologies.
  • Experience with federal and state regulations governing pharmaceutical contracting and government pricing.
