About this job
Job Description Summary
Organization Summary Statement:The History Department of the University of Maryland, in conjunction with the Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish History, seeks to appoint a Professor of Modern Jewish History (nineteenth-twentieth century) at the Associate or Full Professor level with tenure.
Geographical and methodological specializations are open. However, scholars who focus on Europe and/or North America and whose work engages cultural history, the history of political or communal institutions, or global interactions are especially encouraged to apply.
Minimum qualifications
• Employment in a research or teaching field for 5–7 years post-degree.
• A substantial body of scholarship (typically including one or more monographs as appropriate to rank) and significant experience teaching at the college or university level.
Preferences:
Candidates at the Associate Professor level must have established, or be well on their way to establishing, a national reputation. Especially for historians working in non-US fields, the Department may also consider evidence of recognition abroad, particularly in the candidate’s country or region of study. At the Full Professor level, candidates will have produced significant scholarship beyond the standards set for the Associate Professor.
Teaching requirements include undergraduate and graduate level courses in the new faculty member’s area of expertise as well as contributions to the broader History and Jewish Studies curricula and the University's general education courses. Courses might include existing courses in American Jewish History, the Holocaust, modern anti-Semitism, or other appropriate topics drawing on the faculty member’s expertise and teaching interests.
Physical Demands: The position primarily involves work in an office and classroom environment. Duties require the ability to sit for extended periods, use a computer and standard office equipment, and communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff. The role may involve standing for long periods while teaching, occasional walking across campus, and light lifting (typically up to 10–15 pounds) for materials such as books or instructional equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
