About this job

Engineering Manager, Product

Doctronic | New York City or San Francisco (hybrid) | Full time

The role

Doctronic gives people free, private access to AI health guidance and affordable visits with human physicians. Millions of consultations already flow through the product.

We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a team building Doctronic’s products and the AI systems behind them. You will develop engineers, shape technical direction, and turn ambiguous product needs into software that works reliably in production.

This is a hands-on management role. You will work in the codebase, guide architecture, review changes, debug production issues, and ship alongside your team. You will be accountable for team health, technical quality, delivery, and the impact of what you build.

We expect engineering leaders to work AI-natively. Coding agents are part of daily delivery across planning, implementation, testing, review, and debugging. You should have strong opinions grounded in practice about how to direct agents, validate their work, and help a team accomplish more with them. You remain responsible for the decisions and correctness of what ships.

What you will do

  • Lead and grow a team of product engineers through clear expectations, coaching, direct feedback, and high standards.

  • Partner with product, design, clinical, AI, and operations teams to understand problems, set priorities, and define what success looks like.

  • Turn incomplete requirements into focused projects, make technical tradeoffs, and keep the team shipping through short planning cycles.

  • Contribute production code, lead technical investigations, review changes, and help resolve difficult implementation and production problems.

  • Guide work across user experiences, backend services, data models integrations, and AI workflows. Help engineers own complete solutions across those boundaries.

  • Turn AI capabilities into useful product behavior, with clear interfaces, reliable orchestration, appropriate safeguards, and evaluations that reflect real use.

  • Make coding agents and automation effective across the team. Improve how work is scoped, context is supplied, results are verified, and repeated work becomes reusable tooling.

  • Own the operation of the services your team ships, partnering with Platform on shared infrastructure, tooling, and standards.

  • Review product usage, user feedback, AI evaluations, and production performance after launch. Use what you learn to improve the product and the team’s decisions.

  • Hire strong engineers and build a team that can take on broader scope as Doctronic grows.

What we are looking for

  • Experience managing and developing engineers who build and operate user-facing products or the systems behind them.

  • A strong software engineering background and the current ability to contribute production code and work through difficult technical problems.

  • Experience shipping across frontend and backend systems, with depth in at least one area and the ability to lead work across the rest.

  • Good product judgment: you can clarify the problem, challenge assumptions, choose an appropriate scope, and connect engineering decisions to user outcomes.

  • Daily experience directing coding agents and evidence that you have improved how a team builds software with them.

  • Practical judgment about AI systems, including where to use models and agents, how to evaluate their behavior, and where explicit controls and human judgment are needed.

  • A record of improving engineering throughput while maintaining quality, reliability, and maintainability.

  • Experience hiring, coaching, giving direct feedback, and helping engineers grow.

  • Sound decisions about patient safety, privacy, security, accessibility, and production reliability.

  • Clear communication across engineering and company leadership, including the ability to explain tradeoffs and surface risks early.

Many candidates will have eight or more years of engineering experience, including two or more years managing engineers. We care more about the products you shipped, the engineers you developed, and your contribution to both than a specific degree, title, or exact tool match. Experience with AI products, agent orchestration, evaluation systems, healthcare, or another regulated field is useful but not required.

Production stack

Our product includes a Next.js, React, and TypeScript web application; native iOS and Android apps written in Swift and Kotlin; and Python and FastAPI services. Backend systems use MariaDB, SQLAlchemy, Redis, and Celery. Services run in Docker on AWS ECS and integrate with AI providers, telehealth systems, healthcare APIs, and FHIR-based workflows. You do not need experience with every part of the stack, but you should be comfortable learning unfamiliar systems and contributing across product and backend code.

How we work

  • A small, senior engineering team with high autonomy.

  • Managers stay close to the work and ship alongside their teams.

  • Teams own projects from initial definition through launch, iteration, and production support.

  • Short planning cycles and frequent releases.

  • High standards for patient safety, privacy, reliability, and code quality.

Compensation and benefits

  • New York City and San Francisco base salary: $200,000 to $300,000, plus equity.

  • Benefits & 401k
