Barnard College is an independent liberal arts undergraduate college for women in New York City, affiliated with Columbia University. The Barnard Chemistry department currently consists of eight tenure-line faculty, three lecturers, a core facilities and laboratory instrument manager, a senior associate laboratory director, and three lab instructional specialists. Barnard faculty are expected to engage in research as well as undergraduate curriculum development, teaching, advising, and research mentoring. The standard teaching load for a tenure-line faculty member is two courses per semester. This may include advanced electives as well as introductory courses. For this position, special consideration will be given to applicants who can teach in the biochemistry and organic chemistry course sequences.
Barnard College is located in the vibrant Morningside Heights neighborhood, adjacent to Columbia University’s main campus, and approximately 2.5 miles south of Columbia’s medical campus. In late 2026, all of the physical and life sciences departments will move into the newly renovated Roy and Diana Vagelos Science Center, where the person in this position will have a 740-square-foot lab with adjoining office, and access to ample shared resources and equipment on the Barnard campus. Barnard’s status as a highly selective liberal arts college affiliated with a major research university uniquely enables its faculty to innovate in both research and pedagogy.
