About the Role

As a Lead Product Designer at NGP VAN, you'll own the experience of Mobilize, one of our flagship products, while shaping design direction across the broader product suite. This is a role for someone who operates at both levels: sharp enough to execute with craft and conviction, strategic enough to influence product direction before the designs are made.

You'll work closely with product managers, engineers, and cross-functional partners to drive decisions that hold up, not just look good in review. Your work will reach millions of users, people running campaigns, organizing communities, and turning out voters.

You'll work on products that help campaigns win, movements grow, and voters get heard. At NGP VAN, we're building the platform for democracy. The work is meaningful, the team is sharp, and there's real room to make your mark.

Essential Position Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Own end-to-end design for a flagship NGP VAN product, from early problem framing through launch and iteration.
  • Shape design direction across the NGP VAN product suite, establishing patterns and raising the quality bar beyond your primary product.
  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to influence roadmap decisions, not just execute them.
  • Translate ambiguous, complex problems into clear, scalable design solutions that hold up under real user pressure for both legacy product UI and AI innovation.
  • Drive research and usability testing to ground decisions in evidence, and champion that standard across the team.
  • Set and maintain a high bar for interaction quality, visual craft, and accessibility across everything you ship.
  • Contribute to and evolve shared design systems and components that scale across products.
  • Mentor designers and model what lead-level thinking looks like in critique, strategy, and execution.

Requirements:

You bring deep craft, clear thinking, and the credibility to influence product direction, not just execute it. Your portfolio shows complex, shipped work. Your process shows rigor. Your instincts show range.

  • 8+ years of product design experience with a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ownership of complex, multi-surface experiences.
  • Comfortable with designing for AI functionality and working with an AI pattern library across products.
  • Fluency in interaction design and visual craft, with a high bar for quality at every level of fidelity.
  • Proven ability to work within and contribute to design systems, creating solutions that scale beyond your immediate product.
  • Experience shaping product strategy alongside PMs and engineers, influencing decisions upstream of execution.
  • Strong research foundation: you know when to run a usability test, when to use existing data, and how to turn findings into action.
  • Clear, confident communication with stakeholders at all levels, including the ability to defend and adapt decisions under scrutiny.
  • Deep commitment to inclusive design, accessibility (WCAG), and ethical use of AI.
  • Comfortable integrating AI tools like Claude, V0, and FigmaMake into your workflow

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with front-end principles (HTML/CSS) that helps you partner more effectively with engineering.
  • Experience mentoring designers through critique, feedback, and modeling senior-level thinking.
