About this job
Most fund finance seats are a person doing the work. This one is a person deciding what the work should be, then building the agents that do it.
Equi runs alternative strategies through several layers of onshore and offshore vehicles. That structure is what lets us bring hard-to-access strategies to advisors and family offices, and it makes the accounting, money movement and reporting more demanding than a ten-person firm suggests. We need one senior leader to own all of it, and to make it run on systems rather than on anyone's attention.
About Equi
Equi gives investors the tools to own their financial future. We bring institutional-quality alternative strategies, in hedge funds and private credit, that are hard to get access to, to wealth advisors, family offices and institutions. We build and manage multi-strategy funds and white-labeled funds for some of the best independent multi-family offices and advisory firms in the country, pairing Silicon Valley tech with Wall St expertise.
Our growth is accelerating rapidly. We just launched the largest client in our history, have several more signed or close, and are targeting a multiple of today's assets. We're about ten people, so every hire here shapes a function rather than inheriting one. We hire builders and team players that aren't afraid of taking a high degree of ownership.
The role
You'll own finance and fund operations for the fund complex and the management company, reporting to the CEO. That means the NAV cycle and the reconciliation behind it; capital calls, distributions, redemptions and onboarding; every wire and the controls around it; budget, treasury, audit and tax; investor reporting; and the setup of every new vehicle.
We own our books. You'll build and run an internal shadow NAV for every vehicle, one we're 100% confident in, and reconcile it against our administrator every cycle. When the numbers disagree, you decide the firm's position, and you hold our administrator, auditor, counsel and banks to a standard. Partners should be checking our work, not telling us what our numbers are.
When something recurring is manual, you build the thing that removes it instead of absorbing it or hiring for it. These agents touch investor money, so the bar is production, not demo: each one is checked against an independent source, has evals that catch a regression when a prompt or model changes, and hands off to a person instead of failing silently. If you can't say how you'd know an agent got something wrong, it doesn't go live.
What success looks like in year one
We run our own shadow NAV on every vehicle and trust it fully, every close reconciles it against the administrator, and nothing reaches an investor without your sign-off
Agents handle statement intake, reconciliation, exception flagging and the first pass of reporting, each with checks that prove it right
Every wire runs on documented controls with dual approval, and an auditor could walk through them today
Audit, tax and regulatory deadlines are met, and new vehicles launch without the existing complex slipping
Investors and advisers get accurate reporting on time, and the firm's financial picture is current instead of rebuilt at month-end
What you'll own
Our own books: an internal shadow NAV on every vehicle, reconciled against the administrator each cycle, with your final sign-off
Fund operations: capital calls, distributions, redemptions, subscriptions and investor onboarding
Money movement: cash across operating and fund accounts, and approval authority on every wire
Corporate finance: fund expense budget and allocation, burn and runway, board reporting, payroll and benefits
Audit, tax and compliance: counterpart to the auditor and tax preparer, working with our compliance partner
Launches: the financial setup of each new vehicle, with outside counsel on structure and documents
Investor service: reporting that goes out on time, and fast, honest answers to investors and advisers
The provider network: administrator, auditor, tax preparer, counsel, prime brokers and banks, held to a written standard
Who you are
Deep fund accounting and operations: 8 to 12 years running or overseeing the finance and operations of a multi-vehicle fund complex, at an administrator, hedge fund, multi-strategy or private-markets manager, or outsourced fund-CFO practice. You've built or run a shadow NAV, and you find the error in a draft NAV before anyone else does.
A builder: you've shipped agents and automations, not just used AI. You can tell us what you built in the last six months, what it changed, where it broke, and how you proved it right before trusting it with real numbers.
Technical range beyond spreadsheets: coding agents, scripts, no-code automation, small internal apps. You don't need to be an engineer, but you pick up a new tool over a weekend.
Money movement cold: you know who prepares a wire, who approves it, and what gets checked before it goes.
Fund legal fluency: you've worked closely with fund counsel and know what a PPM, side letter or subscription agreement commits the firm to.
Hands-on: you've worked somewhere small enough that you did the work yourself. If the close always belonged to a team two levels down, this isn't the seat.
Direct: you close loops, and you tell the CEO plainly when a number is wrong.
Nice to have: layered multi-vehicle structures, offshore vehicles and their audit cycle, ERISA and plan-asset monitoring, or a CPA or legal background (or equivalent depth earned another way).
How we work
Team-first, flat and direct. Ideas win on merit, people argue a position and change their mind when the evidence says so, and nobody stays narrowly in lane when there's an adjacent fire. Everyone here builds their own tools rather than waiting for a roadmap. New York, hybrid, three days a week in the office.
How we hire
Five steps over about three weeks: a 30-minute screen, a take-home built on a realistic month of fund operations (6 to 10 hours, and the part we weight most), a call with our fund administrator, a 75-minute career interview, and a half-day onsite with the team.
