About this job

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based connectivity with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations.

Blue Origin’s TeraWave Gateway team is developing advanced ground infrastructure to support high-capacity satellite communications. We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the team and take ownership of the mechanical design for our gateway hardware.

This role focuses on the physical design of gateway systems, which form the industrial-grade backbone of our satellite network. Unlike a consumer product, gateway hardware is large-scale infrastructure that demands extreme reliability, serviceability, and performance. It is deployed outdoors in secure facilities, installed by professional crews, and designed for years of continuous operation with planned maintenance. Your work will ensure our ground systems are robust, scalable, and built to last.

You will work in a highly collaborative environment alongside our in-house RF, electrical, mechanical, and systems engineering teams. You will be responsible for the physical design of these critical systems—from large outdoor enclosures and antenna structures to indoor equipment racks and advanced thermal management solutions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design large-scale enclosures, cabinets, and structures for environmental survival, including ingress protection (e.g., NEMA, IP ratings), sealing design, corrosion resistance, UV-stable material selection, and lightning/grounding provisions.
  • Develop foundations, structural mounts, and support systems for large antennas and outdoor equipment, providing clear guidance for professional site installation crews.
  • Partner closely with thermal and electrical engineering on system-level thermal design, focusing on heat extraction from high-power-density electronics in outdoor enclosures and indoor racks, thermal interface selection, and solar load management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in the mechanical design and development of production hardware.
  • Proficiency with a 3D CAD tool (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks, NX) for detailed part and assembly modeling.
  • Experience performing structural and thermal analysis using analytical or finite element methods (FEA).
  • Demonstrated experience designing enclosures, structures, or equipment for outdoor, industrial, or other harsh service environments.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards (ASME Y14.5).
  • Strong working knowledge of manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal fabrication, casting, and welding.
  • Experience taking a hardware product from concept through qualification and into production.
  • Experience with PLM and configuration management systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document and defend technical work.
  • Ability to work effectively across disciplines in a dynamic environment with maturing requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience designing large-scale telecommunications or RF equipment, such as satellite earth stations, cellular base stations, or radar systems.
  • Experience in the thermal-mechanical design of sealed or actively cooled enclosures/cabinets containing high-power-density electronics.
  • Experience with structural design and analysis of systems subject to significant environmental loads (wind, ice, snow, seismic).
  • Experience designing for serviceability and maintenance in an industrial or field-deployed system.
  • Experience with environmental qualification to industrial or telecommunications standards (e.g., NEBS, ETSI).
  • Familiarity with the mechanical design of RF-sensitive components like radomes or frequency-selective surfaces.
  • Experience with the design of equipment racks, cabinets, and cable management for data centers or telecom facilities.
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards for structures and electronics (e.g., AISC, IEC 62368-1).
  • Experience working with domestic and international contract manufacturers and fabricators.
