Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based connectivity with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations. We are looking for an experienced Industrial Designer to lead the aesthetic and cosmetic design of our User Terminal device—a consumer-facing hardware part of our revolutionary TeraWave satellite communications network. This role will own the industrial design, user-facing appearance, and overall product form factor, working closely with mechanical, electrical, and product teams to deliver a manufacturable, market-ready design.
Core Responsibilities include but not limited to
- Lead the industrial design (ID) of the User Terminal device, including overall form factor, surface design, materials, finishes, and color/texture/finish (CMF) strategy.
- Develop design concepts, sketches, renderings, and 3D models to communicate design intent to internal stakeholders and leadership.
- Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers to ensure design feasibility, manufacturability (DFM), and structural integrity while preserving design intent.
- Partner with electrical/RF engineers to ensure industrial design does not compromise antenna performance, thermal management, or other technical requirements.
- Create and maintain design specifications, including surface models (CAD - e.g., Alias, Fusion 360, SolidWorks) for downstream engineering use.
- Design user-facing elements such as enclosures, mounting mechanisms, cable management, ports, indicator lights, and branding elements.
- Build and evaluate physical prototypes/mockups (foam models, 3D prints, etc.) to validate ergonomics, aesthetics, and usability.
- Work with vendors/suppliers on finish samples, tooling feasibility, and prototype builds.
- Ensure design aligns with brand identity and product design language across the broader product lineup.
- Support design validation testing (fit/finish, drop test appearance, weatherability of cosmetic surfaces, etc.).
- Present design concepts and rationale to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders for alignment and sign-off.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in industrial design for consumer hardware products, ideally in telecommunications, networking equipment, consumer electronics, or similar industries.
- Proven experience designing outdoor or semi-outdoor consumer hardware (weatherproof enclosures, antennas, mounting systems) is a strong plus.
- Experience taking a product from concept through production (full product lifecycle).
Skills:
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD/surfacing tools (e.g., Autodesk Alias, Fusion 360, Rhino, SolidWorks).
- Strong sketching/rendering skills (digital and hand sketching) to quickly convey design concepts.
- Deep understanding of manufacturing processes (injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal, etc.) and how they relate to design decisions.
- Knowledge of materials and finishes (CMF) suited for consumer electronics and outdoor-rated hardware.
- Familiarity with DFM/DFA principles and ability to collaborate effectively with mechanical engineering teams.
- Understanding of thermal, RF, and structural constraints as they relate to ID (not expected to be an expert, but must be able to collaborate effectively with engineering).
- Strong portfolio showcasing shipped consumer hardware products (required for application).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing products with external antennas or RF-sensitive enclosures.
- Experience with ruggedized or outdoor consumer products (IP-rated enclosures).
