About this job

Join us at the forefront of AWS's sustainability initiatives to work on the advancements that will deliver Amazon's long term worldwide sustainability strategy. At Amazon, we're working to be the most customer-centric company on earth. To get there, we need exceptionally talented, bright, and driven people.

AWS Global Sustainability (AWSGS) is a team of sustainability experts, scientists, engineers, program strategists, and product managers that deliver on our ambition to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 as part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge, as well as manage and report on our sustainability progress more broadly.

We are looking for a results-oriented Sr. Sustainability Specialist who’s passionate about building decarbonization into core business strategy. You bring deep subject matter expertise in GHG data management and accounting across all three Scopes, and a clear point of view on how to leverage technology and innovations to drive deep decarbonization across global operations and supply chains. You have the subject-matter expertise to dive deep into product LCA and energy grid mechanics, a demonstrated ability to think strategically about business and operational challenges, and a skill set to drive tactical execution across multiple workstreams. You thrive in ambiguity – structuring problems, reaching defensible conclusions, and documenting clearly.

In this role you will work across AWS sustainability and finance teams to harmonize, improve, and execute AWS's overall plan to net-zero emissions. You will build programs where they do not exist today, and will work across Infrastructure teams (energy, real estate, capacity delivery, environmental) to embed carbon-aware decision-making into how current and future AWS data centers are planned, sited, and built. You will work across science, engineering, and reporting teams to strengthen the integrity and granularity of AWS's GHG inventory where its needed to support action.

Key job responsibilities

In this role you will be responsible for:

Own and mature the AWS net-zero transition plan — setting strategy, harmonizing science and program work across teams, improving data quality and forecasts, identifying key abatement levers, and integrating decarbonization into business operations.

Partner with infrastructure planning, real estate, energy, and data center design/engineering teams to integrate carbon considerations into siting, design, and development decisions.

Serve as a subject-matter expert on carbon accounting and GHG inventory methodology within the group and across partner teams.

Develop, document, and operationalize new and improved carbon accounting methodologies for both operational and embodied emissions across the AWS infrastructure lifecycle.

Measure the carbon impact of current and future infrastructure and sustainability programs, and effectively communicate results to key decision-makers and leaders.

Responsible for program delivery, developing metrics, internal and audit-ready reporting, and managing data inputs from multiple teams.

Bring a solutions-oriented mindset, offering creative, rigorous, and defensible approaches to measurement challenges.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Environmental Science, Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical), Data/Statistics, or other Sustainability-related field, or 6+ years of additional field-specific work experience
  • 5+ years of experience developing and executing environmental sustainability, carbon accounting, or GHG inventory programs in the private or public sector
  • Fluency with AI/GenAI tools and a clear point of view on using them to automate low-value analytical work
  • Experience obtaining, managing, and analyzing carbon and energy data
  • Experience developing or applying carbon accounting methodologies (operational and/or embodied carbon)
  • Experience leading programs involving multiple teams and stakeholders
  • Experience working across both technical and business functions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree (MBA/MS) in a quantitative, engineering, or sustainability-related field
  • Deep familiarity with the GHG Protocol (Corporate, Scope 2, Scope 3, and Product/Project standards) and carbon accounting frameworks
  • Demonstrated experience embedding carbon considerations into infrastructure, capital, or sustainable building programs
  • Experience with embodied carbon / life cycle assessment (LCA) and associated tools or databases
  • Successful track record leading methodology or program development from idea to execution
