About this job
Role Overview
The Business Architect will define and improve front-to-back operating models for loan and asset-backed investment servicing, with primary emphasis on middle office services. The role will translate client and operational needs into service definitions, workflows, controls, data requirements, platform capabilities, and implementation roadmaps across BSL, private credit, and ABF portfolios.
The successful candidate will combine practical middle and back office servicing knowledge with business architecture skills. Experience gained within a fund administrator, asset servicer, or asset manager is especially relevant, as is familiarity with investment accounting and loan servicing platforms.
Preferred Candidate Profile
- Combines hands-on loan servicing knowledge with the ability to design enterprise operating models and technology-enabled services.
- Understands how loan and ABF terms drive operational events, accounting treatment, cash movement, controls, and reporting.
- Can move comfortably between detailed workflow analysis and executive-level recommendations.
- Uses practical judgement to balance client needs, operational scalability, platform constraints, risk, and implementation feasibility.
Key Responsibilities
Middle Office Service Design
- Define target operating models and service boundaries for loan middle office activities across BSL, private credit, and ABF portfolios.
- Design end-to-end workflows covering trade capture, confirmation, allocation, closing, settlement, recordkeeping, agent notice processing, cash movements, lifecycle events, reconciliation, exception management, and client reporting.
- Define roles, approval points, segregation of duties, service levels, controls, escalation paths, and handoffs among investment teams, middle office, loan operations, fund accounting, custody, external administrators, agents, trustees, and counterparties.
- Develop scalable service models that distinguish standardized processing from high-touch handling required for bespoke or low-volume instruments.
Loan and ABF Servicing Expertise
- Provide functional expertise across revolving and term loans, delayed-draw facilities, syndicated and bilateral loans, private placements, direct lending, participations, and asset-backed or specialty finance structures.
- Define requirements for facility and security setup, commitment and unfunded balance tracking, drawdowns, paydowns, amortization, interest and fee accruals, rate resets, payment-in-kind activity, amendments, restructurings, covenant events, and distressed asset processing.
- Familiar with ABF operating requirements for collateral-backed structures, borrowing-base or eligibility data, payment waterfalls, principal and interest allocation, servicer or trustee reporting, and reconciliation to underlying collateral and cash activity.
- Assess functional gaps for complex terms, non-standard notices, variable schedules, custom calculations, multiple accounting bases, and instruments requiring manual intervention.
Cash, Settlement, Reconciliation, and Controls
- Design controlled processes for receiving and validating loan notices, creating payment instructions, verifying payee and standing settlement instructions, obtaining required approvals, monitoring release, and confirming settlement.
- Define daily cash, position, principal, income, accrual, commitment, and settlement reconciliations across investment books of record, accounting books of record, custodians, agent banks, trustees, and third-party administrators.
- Establish exception-management, break-resolution, audit-trail, maker-checker, data-quality, and operational-risk requirements.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual processing while retaining appropriate controls for bespoke private credit and ABF activity.
Investment Accounting and Platform Integration
- Translate servicing requirements into functional specifications for investment accounting, loan servicing, order management, data, cash, document, and reporting platforms.
- Define data flows and control points between front office platforms, loan subledgers, investment accounting systems, fund accounting platforms, custody systems, and client reporting solutions.
- Support security master, facility, transaction, cash, income, valuation, collateral, and reference-data models required for BSL and ABF servicing.
- Evaluate platform capabilities, integration gaps, data lineage, reconciliation requirements, and manual workarounds, then recommend practical target-state solutions and phased roadmaps.
Client, Product, and Implementation Support
- Lead discovery workshops with asset managers, asset owners, operations teams, accountants, administrators, and technology stakeholders.
- Document current-state operating models, pain points, service gaps, business requirements, future-state workflows, and implementation dependencies.
- Partner with product, operations, technology, risk, legal, compliance, implementation, and client teams to move service concepts into controlled production capabilities.
- Contribute to proposals, service descriptions, due diligence responses, implementation plans, governance forums, and client-facing solution materials.
Preferred Functional Knowledge
- Strong understanding of loan middle office and back office servicing, including the relationships among trade support, loan administration, settlement, recordkeeping, investment accounting, fund accounting, custody, and reporting.
- Knowledge of BSL and private loan lifecycles, agent bank communications, industry settlement practices, commitments, funding events, income processing, fees, amendments, and restructurings.
- Working knowledge of ABF structures and the operational implications of collateral data, servicer or trustee activity, borrowing bases, payment waterfalls, and cash allocation.
- Understanding of investment book of record and accounting book of record concepts, accruals, positions, cash, realized and unrealized activity, multi-currency processing, valuation, and reconciliation.
- Ability to distinguish middle office responsibilities from investment decision-making, credit judgement, formal loan agency, custody, and fund accounting responsibilities.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant experience in loans, private credit, asset-backed finance, investment operations, business architecture, product management, or financial services consulting.
- Demonstrated experience designing or operating middle office services for loans, private credit, structured credit, or asset-backed portfolios.
- Experience in middle and back office servicing within a fund administrator, asset servicer, or asset manager is highly desirable.
- Proven ability to create operating models, process maps, service definitions, functional requirements, controls, data mappings, and implementation roadmaps.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work across operations, accounting, product, architecture, engineering, risk, legal, client service, and senior leadership.
- Experience with regulated control environments, operational risk, audit requirements, and service-level governance is helpful.
Technology Experience
- Experience with investment accounting, loan servicing, or portfolio management software is helpful. Relevant platforms may include:
- Allvue, SimCorp, Aladdin, Broadridge, LoanX, WSO, or similar loan and investment accounting platforms.
- Charles River Investment Management Solution and Charles River Private Markets, or comparable order, investment book of record, and private markets platforms.
- Cash management, reconciliation, document ingestion, data management, collateral, trustee, and client reporting solutions.
- Interface design and data exchange using files, application programming interfaces, messaging, and vendor or administrator feeds.
