About this job

About the Team

OpenAI’s Product & Research Communications team helps people understand our technology, what it makes possible, and how to use it. We work closely with teams across the company to bring new products and research to the world, tell stories grounded in real experiences, and build trusted relationships with journalists.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Consumer Product Communications Lead to shape how people understand and experience ChatGPT and OpenAI’s consumer-facing products. You’ll lead product communications strategy, launches, and proactive campaigns, and manage the agency partner supporting this work.

You’ll develop a clear narrative for our consumer products and bring it to life through compelling launches, useful demonstrations, and stories about how people use AI in their everyday lives.

You’ll build momentum between announcements, finding fresh ways to reach new audiences while earning the trust of the people who use our products most deeply.

This role calls for a hands-on communications leader with strong editorial judgment, creative ambition, and the ability to turn ideas into results. You’ll have a clear point of view, work with substantial autonomy, and build close partnerships across the company.

In this role, you will:

  • Own the communications strategy and narrative for ChatGPT and consumer-facing products, connecting product developments to what matters to users.

  • Lead product launches from strategy through execution, including positioning, messaging, media outreach, spokesperson preparation, and follow-through.

  • Develop proactive campaigns that show how people use our products to learn, create, and solve everyday problems.

  • Partner closely with Product, Research, Engineering, Marketing, Design, Legal, and other communications teams to shape plans, resolve tradeoffs, and communicate accurately.

  • Build relationships with consumer and technology journalists, creators, and other voices who help people understand new technology.

  • Direct the consumer communications agency partner, setting priorities, writing clear briefs, giving useful feedback, and holding the team accountable for quality and results.

  • Write and edit launch materials, pitches, talking points, and other communications with a high standard for clarity, accuracy, and originality.

  • Anticipate questions and concerns, bring audience feedback into planning, and assess whether campaigns improve understanding and earn trust.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Expressing strong perspective / conviction / confidence / love writing narrative / influence

  • Strong management skills

  • Have a strong track record leading communications for consumer technology products, including major launches and proactive campaigns.

  • Can turn complex product capabilities into clear, compelling stories without losing accuracy or overstating what the technology can do.

  • Combine strategic judgment with hands-on execution and are as comfortable developing a narrative as writing a pitch or preparing a spokesperson.

  • Build trusted relationships across functions, influence decisions, and help teams reach a clear direction when perspectives differ.

  • Bring creative ideas and strong editorial taste. You can explain why a story, demo, or campaign will resonate and make the work better through specific feedback.

  • Take initiative, make sound decisions independently, and stay organized in a fast-moving environment.

  • Have experience managing agency partners and getting excellent work from a combined internal and external team.

  • Understand consumer media and culture, care about the experience of early adopters and power users, and are curious about how AI is changing people’s lives.
