Job Description Summary

For over forty years, HarbourVest has been home to a committed team of professionals with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to deliver impactful solutions to our clients and investing partners. As our global firm grows, we continue to add individuals who seek a collaborative, open-door culture that values diversity and innovative thinking.

In our collegial environment that’s marked by low turnover and high energy, you’ll be inspired to grow and thrive. Here, you will be encouraged to build on your strengths and acquire new skills and experiences.

We are committed to fostering an environment of inclusion that promotes mutual respect among all employees. Understanding and valuing these differences optimizes the potential of both the individual and the firm.

HarbourVest is an equal opportunity employer.

This position will be a hybrid work arrangement. You will receive 18 remote workdays per quarter to use at your discretion, subject to manager approval. For example, you may choose to work in the office 4 days per week and take one remote day weekly (typically 13 weeks per quarter), leaving 5 additional remote days to be used as needed.

HarbourVest is seeking an experienced valuation professional to join its Evergreen Valuations team. This individual will play a key role in the daily valuation of evergreen fund investments.

This candidate will be responsible for daily valuation activities across a diversified portfolio of private market investments, including primary fund investments, secondary investments, direct co-investments, and structured or credit-related investments. The role calls for sound valuation judgment, curiosity, and an understanding of private market investment structures. The candidate will be comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment while applying consistent valuation practices and controls.

This position will work closely with Fund Accounting, Investment Teams, Portfolio Analytics, Treasury, Operations, Risk, and other internal team members to identify events, evaluate portfolio changes, and ensure that valuations are supported, documented and reviewed.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Valuation and NAV Oversight

  • Perform daily valuation activities for investments held within HarbourVest’s evergreen funds.
  • Assess portfolio activity and market developments that may affect investment values, including capital calls, distributions, new investments, realizations, financing activity, foreign exchange movements, public market changes, and material company-specific or fund-specific events.
  • Review daily valuation movements and review changes that exceed established thresholds or appear inconsistent with portfolio activity, market conditions, or investment performance.
  • Ensure valuation adjustments are appropriately calculated, supported, approved, and communicated within the daily NAV timetable.

Valuation Analysis

  • Build and maintain valuation methodologies for private equity, venture capital, private credit, infrastructure, real assets, and other private market investments.
  • Evaluate the appropriateness of reported GP NAVs and determine whether adjustments are vital based on reporting lags, subsequent events, market movements, investment performance, financing structures, or other available information.
  • Analyze valuation inputs such as public market indices, comparable companies, credit spreads, foreign exchange rates, transaction activity, operating performance, and capital structure changes.

Controls and Oversight

  • Maintain a operating framework around the daily valuation process, including documented review procedures, approval requirements, exception reporting, and customer concern protocols.
  • Develop valuation review guidelines and other controls designed to identify unusual movements.
  • Maintain valuation documentation that supports methodologies, assumptions, judgments, adjustments, and conclusions.

Reporting and Coordination

  • Serve as a valuation contact for Fund Accounting and other organizations involved in the daily NAV process.
  • Partner with Investment Teams to obtain and assess information regarding portfolio developments and valuation-impacting events.
  • Prepare daily reporting on valuation movements, exceptions, outstanding information, and key areas of judgment.
  • Support investor reporting and respond to valuation-related questions from internal teams.
  • Coordinate the resolution of valuation issues within the daily deadlines.

Operational Improvement and Team Leadership

  • Help design and enhance valuation processes that support the growth of HarbourVest’s evergreen product platform.
  • Look for opportunities to automate data collection, valuation calculations, exception monitoring, and management reporting.
  • Partner with technology and data teams to improve valuation systems, dashboards, workflows, and data quality.

What You'll Bring

  • Experience supporting investment valuation, private markets, fund accounting, financial reporting, audit, transaction advisory, or related work
  • Familiarity with private market investment structures and valuation approaches
  • Comfort working with data and financial analysis in Excel or similar tools
  • Experience partnering with colleagues across multiple teams
  • CPA, CFA, ASA, or other professional designation is valued but not required

Key Competencies

  • Strong analytical and valuation thinking.
  • Ability to make decisions using incomplete, delayed, or conflicting information.
  • Capacity to perform successfully under deadlines and handle valuation matters simultaneously.
  • Understanding of business impact, issue, and risk in a daily NAV environment.
  • Ability to explain valuation matters to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Collaboration skills paired with proficiency in coordinating efforts across investment, accounting, operations, technology, and control functions.
