Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other.  We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Cat Technology collaborates with partners across the Caterpillar enterprise to advance technologies including autonomy and automation, which helps enhance site safety, productivity and efficiency across customer operations worldwide. Cat Technology also owns enterprise-wide initiatives in innovation, research and development, manufacturing automation and advanced materials, ensuring Caterpillar continues to lead the industry in technological excellence and engineering innovation.

As the Senior Autonomy Engineering Specialist (DevOps Architect), you will serve as the technical authority for DevOps architecture across Caterpillar’s onboard mining and construction platforms. You will collaborate closely with customers, Product Owners, System Architects, and engineering teams to translate complex operational and delivery needs into scalable, secure, and highly automated DevOps solutions that enable reliable software delivery in embedded and distributed environments.

In this role, you will define and evolve the DevOps architecture strategy, establishing enterprise-grade CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code frameworks, observability standards, and automation best practices that drive consistency, efficiency, and resilience across MineStar onboard products. You will play a critical role in bridging development, test, and operations ecosystems with onboard/embedded platforms and cloud/backend services, ensuring seamless integration, high availability, and performance in constrained and mission-critical environments.

As a hands-on technical leader, you will provide architectural governance, mentor engineering teams, and guide execution across a scaled Agile environment—enabling frequent, predictable, and high-quality releases while strengthening Caterpillar’s capabilities in automation, autonomy, cybersecurity, and digital innovation.

Additional Information:

  • Location:  Irving, TX (United States)
  • Required Travel: Up to 10% (International)
  • Relocation Assistance Offered: None.
  • US Work Authorization Sponsorship Offered: None.
  • This position requires the selected individual to work onsite at the Irving, TX office.

What You Will Do:

  • Drive DevOps Architecture Strategy: Lead the definition and evolution of scalable DevOps architecture, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, environment provisioning, observability, security integration, and performance optimization strategies for embedded and distributed systems.
  • Translate Business and Operational Needs into Solutions: Partner with customers, Product Owners, and System Architects to analyze delivery workflows, define requirements, and design end-to-end DevOps solutions that enable reliable, secure, and efficient software delivery for complex onboard applications.
  • Enable Integration Across Systems: Provide expertise on integration between development, build, test, and deployment pipelines with onboard/embedded systems, cloud platforms, APIs, and infrastructure—ensuring robust automation, data flow, security, and system reliability.
  • Establish DevOps Standards and Reuse: Drive consistency across MineStar products by creating and governing reusable pipeline templates, automation frameworks, infrastructure modules, and best practices that improve efficiency, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Lead End-to-End DevOps Delivery: Oversee and contribute to the design, implementation, testing, and operation of CI/CD pipelines and platform tooling, ensuring high-quality, secure, and performant delivery of embedded and connected applications.
  • Champion Quality and Best Practices: Define and promote automated testing strategies (unit, integration, system, and release validation), security, monitoring, and reliability practices (SRE) to ensure robust and resilient software delivery.
  • Provide Technical Leadership and Mentorship: Guide and mentor engineers across teams on DevOps principles, conduct architecture and pipeline reviews, and influence technical decisions to elevate overall engineering and operational maturity.
  • Own Architecture Artifacts and Governance: Develop and maintain DevOps architecture documentation, standards, metrics (e.g., deployment frequency, lead time, MTTR), estimates, and validation artifacts to support alignment, scalability, compliance, and long-term sustainability.
  • Dependency Management: Define and govern dependency and artifact management practices using tools such as Conan to ensure build reproducibility, version consistency, and scalable package distribution across embedded and software platforms.
  • Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management.

What You Have (Basic Requirements):

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (software, electrical, computer) or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience in lieu of degree.

    • Experience designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins.
    • Strong understanding of DevOps architecture including pipeline orchestration, environment strategy, configuration management, and release/versioning practices.
    • Experience deploying and managing applications across cloud, edge, and on-premise platforms using containerization and orchestration technologies.
    • Ability to optimize pipeline performance, build efficiency, deployment speed, and system reliability in embedded or distributed environments.
  • Strategic Thinking: Knowledge of the importance of "big picture" thinking and planning; ability to apply organizational acumen and competitiveness to identify and maintain focus on key success factors for the organization.
