Our Team:
We have an amazing opportunity to join our team as Senior Engineer. The electric power system is undergoing a historic transformation driven by state and federal energy policies, evolving market conditions, and rapid advancements in emerging technologies. The Transmission System Planning department plays a critical role in enabling this transformation while maintaining a safe, reliable, and resilient bulk electric system.
The Senior Engineer will serve as a technical subject matter expert responsible for conducting advanced power system modeling, simulation, and planning studies. The successful candidate will possess extensive experience in transmission planning, operational studies, EMT analysis, and inverter-based resource (IBR) integration. This role requires the ability to leverage company and industry data to evaluate and develop cost-effective, reliable transmission solutions that support future system needs, including transmission lines, renewable generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), FACTS devices, synchronous condensers, HVDC systems, and other emerging technologies. Studies will be performed in accordance with Eversource, ISO New England (ISO-NE), Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC), and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) requirements.
The role can be based in Hartford, CT, Westwood, MA, or Manchester NH
Essential Functions:
- Lead, conduct and present scenario and probabilistic based planning studies under a variety of existing and forecast system conditions.
- Use technical experience to contribute sound engineering input to develop robust, reliable, low-cost solutions.
- Exchange study results and perform technical reviews of data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders.
- Interface with ISO-New England, area transmission owners, and Eversource departments, such as: UG and OH engineering, Substation Technical, Distributed Energy Resource (DER), Operations, and other departments to understand and mitigate electric system needs, challenges, and enable reliable future growth.
- Coordinate and oversee studies performed by vendors and consultants, analyze assumptions and review conclusions to integrate into company initiatives.
- Prepare engineering output and summarize in reports, spreadsheets, and presentation to Eversource colleagues, management, industry groups and regional stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-functional groups to develop long-range planning standard and criteria for integrating and enabling new technologies, including but not limited to photovoltaic solar (PV), electric vehicles (EV), and battery storage.
- Support Transmission Operations and the Eversource Control Room through outage coordination studies, short-circuit studies, switching transient analyses, and other system reliability assessments
- Work collaboratively with Substation Engineering, study and identify substation equipment specification, insulation coordination, overvoltage and overcurrent protection, harmonics performance and mitigation measures for transmission and substation facilities
- Lead, develop and maintain high-fidelity electromagnetic transient (EMT) models for transmission and substation equipment, including transmission lines, transformers, shunt reactors/capacitors, surge arresters, generators, synchronous condensers, data centers, and IBRs such as STATCOMs and SVCs
- Collaborate with ISO-NE, Academia and DOE National Labs on power system planning and operation technology strategy, research, and development.
Other supporting tasks include:
- Actively represent Eversource on regional, national, and international committees and working groups such as NATF, IEEE, state public utility commissions
- Demonstrate self-sufficiency and support Eversource team by demonstrating accountability, consistency, and cooperation with all departments
