About this job
The Opportunity
The legal industry is broken — lawyers bill by the hour, charge enormous sums, and take forever to respond. This means that a lot of people who need legal advice don't get it. We're using AI to solve this problem. AI takes the first pass at everything our lawyers do, so that the lawyers can focus on human interaction. We're starting with negotiating commercial contracts, and will expand quickly from there to other use cases within legal. We're reimagining what a contract can be in the AI age. We're a veteran team, with one successful exit already, who've been doing deep learning in the legal space since long before ChatGPT.
Description
General Legal is seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer who has the passion and drive to move fast, learn new things, and drive ambitious projects through to completion. You'll own major parts of our product end-to-end, from figuring out what we should build through architecture, implementation, deployment, and iteration with users.
This is a unique opportunity to join us at the ground level and play a foundational role in developing a platform that will set new standards for the legal industry. We are looking for someone who is comfortable with ambiguity, cares deeply about product quality, and wants significant ownership rather than narrowly scoped engineering work.
There will be opportunity to grow your role as the company grows, either as a senior independent contributor or as an engineering leader.
Responsibilities
- Design and build AI-enabled products and features end-to-end using an AI-enabled development process
- Own major technical projects from initial idea through production deployment
- Work across the frontend, backend, APIs, databases, integrations, and infrastructure as needed
- Build intuitive interfaces for complex AI-powered workflows
- Work closely with lawyers and other users to rapidly understand problems and ship solutions
- Make pragmatic architectural decisions that allow us to move quickly without sacrificing reliability
- Be proactive and come up with ideas on how to build our products better
- Help establish engineering practices and technical standards as the team grows
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience
- Strong experience building and shipping production web applications
- Ability to work effectively across the frontend and backend
- Strong product judgment and ability to operate with significant autonomy
- Computer Science degree or equivalent experience
- Eligible to work in the US, and able to work in-office a minimum of 3 days a week in our SF or NY office locations.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience building AI-native products or working extensively with LLM APIs
- Experience at an early-stage startup
- Experience owning products or systems from zero to one
- Experience with agentic systems, real-time applications, document processing, or collaborative software
- Experience in the legal tech space
Compensation & Benefits
$190,000 - $250,000 base, calibrated to experience and location
Health, dental, vision; unlimited PTO; wellness stipend & more…
