About this job
Antora Energy delivers affordable, reliable energy to industry, data centers, and the grid. Our thermal batteries turn low-cost electricity into always-on heat and power, without supply-constrained critical minerals or multi-year construction timelines.
We are growing our company with people who put team and mission first, value connection through laughter and joy, and work with humility and openness. We are committed to building a diverse, passionate, and creative team dedicated to a future powered by abundant, clean, low-cost energy.
Position Summary
The Senior Industrial Hygienist will run Antora’s industrial hygiene program across our San Jose manufacturing, machining, and R&D sites and support our growing domestic footprint. This is a hands-on role for an industrial hygienist with at least five years of experience and a strong grounding in OSHA and Cal/OSHA health standards and TLVs (Threshold Limit Values), published by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. You’ll work with operations, maintenance, engineers, process owners, and R&D teams to understand how work is done, review SDSs and toxicology information, determine which exposure assessments are needed, and conduct the sampling yourself.
You’ll spend most of your time where the exposures are: in machine shops, cleanroom laboratories, and R&D test areas. You'll work with engineers and scientists as they develop new technology. You’ll explain results clearly to the employees whose exposures you measure and to Antora’s leaders, then use the data and what you hear from the people doing the work to improve the program. This role combines fieldwork and practical problem-solving with the day-to-day work of maintaining exposure monitoring, controls, and health programs. Industrial hygiene is part of Antora’s mission to stop global warming: the safer we build and test our thermal energy storage systems, the faster we can scale.
Roles & Responsibilities
Exposure assessment
- Maintain and expand Antora’s qualitative and quantitative exposure assessment program using similar exposure groups to assess dusts (including graphite and other carbon dusts), metal fumes, chemical vapors, noise, and heat stress.
- Plan and conduct personal and area air monitoring, noise surveys, and heat stress evaluations, and interpret the results against occupational exposure limits (OELs).
- Communicate results to employees and leadership, including through written exposure notifications and summary reports.
- Review SDSs and toxicology data for new or changed processes, chemicals, and equipment - work with engineers and process owners to understand how they will be used, and determine what exposure assessments are needed before they are introduced.
Controls and health programs
- Recommend and verify controls that follow the hierarchy of controls, including local exhaust ventilation, enclosure, substitution, and PPE.
- Evaluate ventilation and local exhaust performance, and support combustible dust hazard analyses.
- Run the respiratory protection, hearing conservation, hazard communication, and heat illness prevention programs. This includes fit testing, respirator selection, and chemical approval reviews.
Compliance and program support
- Maintain compliance with OSHA and Cal/OSHA general industry health standards (e.g., air contaminants, respiratory protection, noise, hexavalent chromium, and heat illness prevention) and related record keeping.
- Manage sampling equipment and calibration, chain of custody, and relationships with accredited labs and outside industrial hygiene consultants.
- Develop and deliver relevant training for employees and supervisors.
- Help strategize solutions for larger issues while also being willing to do the hard work of maintaining our processes. (You may be sampling dust in the machining room one day, reviewing a new chemical for an R&D test the next, and presenting results to leadership the day after, or all in one day.)
Key Qualifications
- 5+ years of industrial hygiene experience in a general industry setting, such as industrial or manufacturing operations.
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health, chemistry, biology, engineering, or a similar science-based discipline.
- Direct experience designing and conducting exposure assessments using NIOSH and OSHA sampling methods and interpreting results against OELs.
- Strong working knowledge of toxicology, including routes of exposure and dose-response, and the ability to use SDSs and toxicology data to determine which hazards need evaluation.
- Experience working with engineers and process owners to understand a process and turn it into a sampling plan.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA and Cal/OSHA health standards and ACGIH TLVs, and direct experience running respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and hazard communication programs.
- A commitment to continually improving your ability to research and monitor regulations and industry best practices (e.g., OSHA, Cal/OSHA, ACGIH, NIOSH, AIHA, ANSI).
- Great interpersonal and communication skills that can adapt to the shop floor, to training rooms, to speaking to senior management.
- Strong ability to manage multiple projects in a disciplined manner and ensure deliverables for key priorities are met in a timely manner.
- An open and humble approach to finding the best solution to an issue that is in alignment with our mission.
- The patience and determination to work in a fast-paced work environment with conflicting priorities.
Additional Qualifications Desired
- CIH certification preferred, or active progress toward it.
- Experience with graphite, carbon, or metal dusts and combustible dust hazards.
- Experience with ventilation testing and direct-reading instruments.
- A master’s degree in industrial hygiene, toxicology, or an EH&S-relevant discipline.
- Experience and passion for working with Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.
