About this job

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

Amazon LEO is seeking a Senior Manufacturing And Automation Engineer to develop, automate, and scale manufacturing processes for complex aerospace hardware, including PCBAs, battery packs, LRUs, and associated components. This role is responsible for transforming prototype and manual manufacturing processes into scalable, reliable, and efficient production solutions. The successful candidate will lead manufacturing process development, automation equipment integration, process optimization, and production readiness, ensuring manufacturing systems meet quality, throughput, safety, and cost objectives.

The ideal candidate combines strong manufacturing process engineering expertise with hands-on experience in industrial automation, equipment design, robotics, and production system integration.

Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities

Manufacturing Process Development: Develop, optimize, and industrialize manufacturing processes for PCBA, battery pack, LRU, and component assembly, improving efficiency, repeatability, quality, and scalability.

Manufacturing Automation: Design, develop, and implement automated and semi-automated production systems incorporating robotics, PLCs, motion control, machine vision, sensors, and industrial controls.

Equipment and Tooling Development: Define requirements and lead the design, fabrication, integration, and commissioning of manufacturing equipment, fixtures, tooling, and automated assembly stations.

Process Capability and Optimization: Establish manufacturing process parameters, implement process controls, and apply PFMEA, DOE, SPC, and capability analysis to improve yield, reduce variation, and eliminate defects.

Production Scalability: Develop manufacturing strategies and automation solutions to increase production capacity, reduce cycle time, minimize manual operations, and support production ramp-up.

Equipment Integration and Qualification: Lead equipment acceptance, commissioning, process validation, and production release, ensuring manufacturing systems meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements.

Manufacturing Troubleshooting: Lead root cause investigations of manufacturing defects, equipment failures, and process inefficiencies, implementing sustainable corrective actions.

Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, Quality, Test Engineering, and suppliers to improve manufacturability, implement process automation, and transition products into production.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
  • Bachelor's degree or above in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or related STEM field
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, process development, industrial automation, or production equipment development.
  • Experience developing and implementing manufacturing processes, automated equipment, or assembly systems.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial automation technologies such as PLCs, robotics, sensors, motion control, or machine vision.
  • Experience with manufacturing process troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
  • Experience with the project management of technical projects
