About this job
Senior Network Engineer
As a Senior Network Engineer, you are a highly skilled, technology-agnostic expert responsible for solving unusually complex IT problems with innovative solutions across the entire infrastructure technology space. In this role, you will leverage your deep knowledge of IT infrastructure's impact on Roche's business to make critical technical decisions with considerable independence.
The Opportunity:
You will proactively influence technology strategy, mentor teams, and ensure that all technical designs and deliveries align with long-term organizational objectives and regulatory standards.
Job Responsibilities
- Scope / (Content Leadership): Act as a multi-disciplinary, technology-agnostic subject matter expert on designing, building, testing, and implementing integrated and resilient solutions across the entire infrastructure technology space. Demonstrate a broad view of how different solutions work together and adapt to business demands, taking accountability for ultimate decision-making in technical design and delivery with considerable independent judgment. Oversee the physical network footprint across the campus (MDF/IDF rooms, structured cabling, hardware deployment) and coordinate local "Hands & Feet" technical support and external vendor installation teams to guarantee continuous on-site operational health. Automate repetitive tasks for efficiency and scalability utilizing tools like Ansible, Terraform, or custom scripts.
- Accountability/Problem Solving: Utilize outstanding problem-solving skills to develop innovative technological ideas and guide them into final products. Follow industry advancements closely to evaluate promising technologies via Proofs of Concept (PoCs) across technology domains. Lead the end-to-end design of infrastructure solutions, maintain related component standards, and serve as a level of escalation point for critical network outages.
- Stakeholder Management: Communicate complex information and potential solutions across the organization, including to the most senior levels of the business, in non-technical terms. Lead as a consultant to senior managers on technology strategy, policies, and objectives, while managing relationships with line-of-business stakeholders. Influence technology vendors, manage local ISP/TELCO providers, and collaborate extensively with IT partners, such as Enterprise Architects and Solution Owners, to integrate feedback.
- Impact/Strategy: Make strategic decisions that significantly affect departmental goals and lead large to enterprise-level project teams to ensure successful implementation. Manage network asset lifecycles, hardware refresh projects, and optimize costs for campus infrastructure deployments. Ensure that all solutions comply with Quality/Regulatory standards and adhere to the organization’s Technical Architecture Framework (TAF). Play a pivotal role in project planning by estimating engineering resources, dependencies, risks, and timelines.
- Complexity / (Product Size): Drive success across multiple product lines within a domain by collaborating effectively with diverse, virtual teams from various locations and cultural backgrounds. Lead geo-distributed teams through influence and mentorship, providing specialized guidance to optimize performance and innovation.
- Business / Technical ability: Apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts, acting as a recognized expert with proven depth and breadth across many areas. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of multiple Roche business areas beyond IT infrastructure, understanding exactly how infrastructure impacts business processes.
Who You Are
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or in a Business field; or equivalent experience.
- 5-8 years of experience in supporting and implementing complex data networks.
- Demonstrated experience in technically leading challenging projects, small-to-medium technical teams, and medium-sized initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience making strategic technical decisions and leading large to enterprise-level project teams.
- Proven track record of architecting, designing, and implementing integrated, reliable infrastructure solutions across the entire technology space.
- Proven track record of building trusted partnerships with business stakeholders, effectively translating complex business requirements into high-impact network solutions while driving strategic alignment.
Technical / Business Skills
- Advanced technical expertise in Enterprise Campus Networking (Core/Distribution/Access Switching, Routing protocols like BGP/OSPF, Enterprise WLAN, NAC/802.1X, Firewalls, and SD-WAN), along with broader infrastructure domains (Platform, Compute and Storage, Datacenter Management, or Network Management).
- Proven experience managing physical layer infrastructure, campus server/MDF rooms, and supervising third-party contractors for physical rollouts and Hands & Feet activities.
- In-depth knowledge of multiple business areas beyond IT infrastructure and a detailed understanding of how IT infrastructure impacts business processes.
- Proven strong and wide experience applying best practices and IT operations in an always-up, always-available service environment utilizing Scrum and Agile methodologies.
- CCNP or CCNA certification is a plus.
Additional Qualifications
- Outstanding problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to integrate advanced technological concepts into viable final products.
- High-Pressure Resilience: Calibrated to stay calm, focused, and decisive during major outages or aggressive project deadlines.
- Commercial Mindset & Financial Acumen: Demonstrated ability to track BOMs (Bill of Materials), support project budget definition and optimize operational costs.
- ITSM Platform Proficiency: Practical experience with IT Service Management tools (ServiceNow highly preferred) for incident resolution, task tracking, and adhering to strict change control processes.
