What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our team as we grow and transform our technology landscape. In this role, you will lead advanced, end-to-end software engineering across multiple systems and technologies — spanning design, development, analysis, configuration, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documentation, health monitoring, and implementation.

You will serve as a subject matter expert across multiple applications and systems, consulting with users to define hardware, software, and functional specifications. Leveraging deep technical and business knowledge, you will drive the planning and execution of complex initiatives, manage resources effectively, and provide meaningful technical leadership throughout the design and development process.

This role carries real influence — you will determine the technical approach within the domain's applications, shape direction across teams, and recommend strategic investments to senior leadership.

What Will You Do?

  • In this role, you will set technical direction within the domain, influence engineering decisions across teams, and recommend strategic investments to the Sr. Director.

  • Technical Direction & Ownership
    • Define the technical approach for the domain's applications, including design patterns, code-review standards, test and release practices, and root-cause fixes for production issues.
    • Influence direction across the domain's teams by collaborating with tech leads, Travelers and GSO engineers, and Enterprise Architecture on architecture, modernization sequencing, and tooling.
    • Recommend investments, vendor choices, and cross-domain trade-offs to the Sr. Director.
    • Reduce key-person and vendor dependency by documenting platform knowledge and developing in-house team capabilities.
  • Tier 1 Reliability, Accuracy & Controls
    • Maintain the reliability, accuracy, and audit-readiness of Tier 1 applications.
    • Lead hands-on root-cause analysis and technical deep dives into production incidents — including data, integration, and access issues — and drive permanent fixes rather than workarounds.
    • Partner with controls, audit, and information security teams to maintain evidence, change controls, and audit readiness.
  • Agreement Application & E-Signature
    • Lead engineering for the compensation agreement application, including phased releases, production readiness, and issue resolution.
    • Own the integration with the e-signature platform, including session management, performance under load, and failure handling.
    • Manage user identity resolution and access for agreement signers.
  • Compensation Platforms & Data
    • Drive modernization of commission calculation and compensation analytics.
    • Support the incentive compensation platform and its integrations, including data feeds, exports, and reconciliation.
    • Partner with the producer management platform team where producer data — codes, licensing, appointments, and identity — affects compensation outcomes.
  • Quality, Release & AI
    • Strengthen testing and release practices through test automation and CI/CD.
    • Apply AI and agentic AI solutions across design, coding, testing, and support — including incident triage, data reconciliation, and test generation — to improve quality and speed.
    • Share AI learnings and best practices with the broader team.
  • Leadership & Collaboration
    • Mentor onshore and offshore engineers and invest in growing the team.
    • Partner with the Product Owner, Scrum Master, and business leadership on priorities, trade-offs, and delivery.
    • Communicate technical status and risk clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Our ideal candidate brings 6+ years of software engineering experience with hands-on strength in Java or .NET, SQL, and AWS.

  • Experience & Education
    • 6+ years of software engineering experience

    • Strong SQL skills with experience reconciling data across relational databases, including Oracle and SQL Server/Sybase
    • Hands-on AWS experience
  • Production Ownership & Delivery
    • Experience owning business-critical applications, including incident response and root-cause analysis
    • Disciplined delivery practices — test automation, CI/CD, source control, and release management
  • Collaboration
    • Proven ability to work effectively with business partners, vendors, and distributed teams

  • The strongest candidates will bring Tier 1 production ownership, compensation platform experience, and familiarity with a controls environment.
    • Compensation platforms — experience with compensation, commission, or incentive platforms
    • Tier 1 production ownership — reliability engineering, incident management, and controls
    • Controls environment — SOX or comparable regulatory controls experience
    • Contract workflow & e-signature — integration experience with DocuSign or a similar platform
    • Identity & access — SSO, claims-based sign-in, and entitlement integration

    • AI in engineering — demonstrated use of AI and agentic AI tools across engineering and testing, with concrete examples
    • Mentorship — experience mentoring onshore and offshore engineers
    • Familiarity with Varicent is a plus — deeper product knowledge can be built on the job with support from the vendor and existing team.
