About this job
Amazon Robotics is looking for an experienced Systems Development Engineer to join the Imperium Data Services team in Austin. Data Services owns the source-of-truth data behind network automation across Amazon's fulfillment network: what devices exist, where they live, how they should be configured, which credentials they use, and what state they are actually in. Our services handle nearly a billion API calls a month and sit underneath config generation, deployment, and lifecycle workflows for hundreds of thousands of IP-enabled devices across thousands of sites. When our data is wrong, networks break; when it is right and fast, the rest of automation can run with confidence.
In this role you will partner with software, systems, and network engineers around the world to build and operate the data layer that network automation depends on. You will work on high-throughput APIs and data stores, collection of live device state, data pipelines, and the validation and staging gates that stop bad data before it reaches production devices. Network engineers and automation teams rely on the accuracy of what we serve. Your work will let them get answers in seconds and spend their time on hard problems instead of manual data cleanup. We value correctness, simplicity, and operational excellence in our designs.
Key job responsibilities
As a Systems Development Engineer on Data Services, you will design, build, and operate highly available services that model network devices, sites, and credentials, serving thousands of requests per second to automation workflows across the fulfillment network. You will build systems that collect the observed state of devices, including hardware inventory, firmware, interfaces, and neighbors, compare it against intended state, and surface drift before it causes customer impact. You will own data quality end to end, from schema design and validation at write time to staged, reviewable data changes, data health monitoring, and alarms that catch bad data before it reaches device configurations. You will lead migrations of legacy data sources onto modern APIs without disrupting the dozens of downstream teams that depend on them. You will take part in on-call, drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions, and turn recurring operational pain into automation, using AWS (CDK, Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, OpenSearch) and CI/CD pipelines to automate infrastructure and deployments.
Ideal candidates enjoy working where distributed systems meet network data. You communicate clearly, turn ambiguous requirements into simple, durable designs, and care as much about how a service runs in production as how it is built. You will work in a fast-moving, collaborative environment with partner teams who depend on your systems every day.
A day in the life
You will be a part of an agile development team following innovative best practices in software development where you will work on technical designs, architecture and coding. To build our applications, you will interact with network engineering teams to gather requirements, provide technical solutions and develop the software that are required in defining our next generation products.
Amazon offers a full range of benefits that assist you and eligible family members, including domestic partners. Benefits can vary by location, the number of regularly scheduled hours you work, length of employment, and job status such as seasonal or temporary employment. 2. Maternity and Parental Leave Options
3. Paid Time Off (PTO)
4. 401(k) Plan
If you are not sure that every qualification on the list above describes you exactly, we'd still love to hear from you! At Amazon, we value people with unique backgrounds, experiences, and skillsets. If you’re passionate about this role and want to make an impact on a global scale, please apply!
About the team
Our team exists so that network engineers and automation teams can trust the data that runs Amazon's fulfillment network. We own the systems of record for network devices, sites, and credentials, plus the systems that observe what is actually running on devices in the field. Config generation, deployments, and lifecycle workflows across Imperium are all built on these services. We are accountable for making that data correct, fast, and safe to change, and we start from the customer: every bad record we prevent is an outage a network engineer never has to debug. As part of Data Services, you will work with automation, network engineering, and build teams across Amazon, and you will own your systems end to end, from design through operating them in production for hundreds of thousands of devices.
Basic Qualifications
- 2+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
- Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building services using AWS products
- Experience with distributed systems at scale
- Experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering
