Job Description
Build the firmware behind next-generation infrared imaging systems.
Teledyne FLIR is seeking an experienced Firmware Engineer to develop FPGA-based solutions for advanced infrared camera systems. In this role, you’ll work at the intersection of FPGA design, digital hardware, video processing, and infrared imaging, developing technology that directly impacts camera performance and capability.
You’ll design and implement advanced video-processing algorithms, develop new camera-control features, support high-speed infrared sensor interfaces, and work hands-on with sophisticated digital hardware throughout the development lifecycle.
This is an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys developing at the hardware/firmware level, solving challenging technical problems, and seeing their work come to life in high-performance imaging products.
This position is based in Goleta, California.
What You’ll Do
- Design, develop, implement, and test FPGA-based firmware and digital hardware for advanced infrared camera systems.
- Implement video signal-processing algorithms and new camera-control capabilities within FPGA architectures.
- Develop and support high-speed interfaces between infrared sensors, processing hardware, memory, and other system components.
- Collaborate with Systems, Mechanical, Software, Firmware, and Video Processing engineers to develop requirements and integrate solutions into complete camera systems.
- Perform hands-on hardware and FPGA debugging using logic analyzers, high-speed oscilloscopes, signal generators, and FPGA development tools.
- Support system integration, troubleshooting, verification, and design validation throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Develop block diagrams, parts lists, design documentation, and materials for technical and design reviews.
- Investigate challenging hardware and firmware issues and drive solutions from initial troubleshooting through resolution.
- Contribute to new capabilities and continuous improvements for high-performance infrared imaging systems.
Technologies & Areas You May Work With
- FPGA architecture and development
- Verilog and VHDL
- Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Lattice, or Microchip FPGAs
- Video and image-processing pipelines
- High-speed sensor interfaces
- Microprocessors and embedded systems
- DDR and flash memory
- I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Bluetooth, and display interfaces
- ModelSim
- MATLAB and Simulink

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of education.
- 5+ years of experience in digital hardware design, FPGA development, testing, or a related engineering discipline.
- Proficiency with Verilog or VHDL for FPGA development and verification.
- Experience with FPGAs, microprocessors, high-speed interfaces, DDR/flash memory, and complex digital electronic systems.
- Hands-on debugging experience using logic analyzers, high-speed oscilloscopes, signal generators, or FPGA debugging tools.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across firmware, software, hardware, systems, mechanical, and other engineering disciplines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with any of the following is a plus. You do not need experience in every area listed below to be considered.
- Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Lattice, or Microchip FPGA families
- Embedded driver development
