About this job

Generative AI is transforming how people work, but one problem is still unsolved: how do you give an AI assistant to 100,000 employees and keep the right guardrails in place? How do you enforce data sovereignty, audit every AI action, and comply with regulations like the EU AI Act, all without slowing down the teams building the product?

As a Senior Software Development Engineer on the Amazon Quick Governance team, you will set the technical direction for the policy infrastructure and enforcement systems that make enterprise AI safe at scale. You will own the architecture of distributed Java services that sit where authorization, compliance, and AI governance meet — systems where correctness is non-negotiable and every decision must be explainable. You will take ambiguous problems that span multiple teams, define the technical strategy, and lead engineers from design through delivery and operations. Our goal is to make the governed path the easiest path: a platform any Quick team can plug into and get policy enforcement, auditability, and observability out of the box.

Key job responsibilities

  • Define and own the architecture for how governance policies are authored, versioned, assigned, and evaluated across complex organizational hierarchies, including group-based assignment, inheritance, and precedence — designed so new governance domains can be added without your team being on the critical path for every integration.
  • Design control-plane workflows and contracts that turn administrator intent into policy artifacts for downstream enforcement services across regions, setting the bar for consistency, auditability, and safe rollout across environments.
  • Lead the technical strategy for telemetry and analytics pipelines that show how AI is used across an organization, including usage dashboards, audit trails, compliance reporting, SIEM integration, and anomaly detection at enterprise scale.
  • Drive alignment with authorization, identity, and guardrails teams on shared interfaces and end-to-end governance design, write and review design documents, and make clear trade-offs between opportunity, resources, and long-term sustainability.
  • Mentor and grow engineers on the team, lead design and operational reviews, drive operational excellence, and actively contribute to hiring.

A day in the life

You might start the morning reviewing a design document for a new policy-inheritance model, then lead a cross-team architecture session with the identity and guardrails teams to align on shared contracts. After lunch you write Java code for a control-plane workflow that orchestrates safe policy rollouts across regions. Later you pair with a teammate to investigate an anomaly in the compliance-reporting pipeline, and close out the day by giving design feedback to a junior engineer working on the admin observability dashboard.
