About this job

AWS Applied AI Solutions (AAIS) is building toward a future where every business innovates with Amazon AI teammates. To get there, we build AI solutions that improve human capabilities and transform entire business functions. We create end-to-end products that surprise and delight out-of-the-box, making complex things easy and hard things possible, with no cloud experience required. We start with customers who embrace the future and build bridges to meet the rest where they are. We pursue ambitious opportunities with conviction, and we are looking for builders who share that mindset.

AWS IoT Core enables billions of devices to connect securely to the cloud — and the Identity and Registry team is at the heart of it. We own the foundational primitives that give every IoT device its identity, manage its metadata, and govern how it interacts with the cloud at massive scale.

As a Software Development Engineer on this team, you will design and build the systems that customers rely on to provision, authenticate, and manage their IoT fleets — from a single prototype to billions of devices in production. You'll work on challenges spanning distributed systems, security, identity management, and scalable metadata storage and retrieval, directly shaping the experience for some of the world's largest IoT deployments.

This is a high-impact role where your work will be felt across the entire AWS IoT platform and by customers spanning multiple industries — from smart home and automotive to broadcasting and industrial automation. If you're excited about building foundational infrastructure that operates at Internet of Things scale and solving hard problems in device identity and registry, we'd love to hear from you.

Key job responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain core services that power device identity and state management for AWS IoT Core, serving billions of devices worldwide
  • Build and operate highly available, low-latency distributed systems that handle device provisioning, authentication, metadata and state management
  • Own the full software development lifecycle — from requirements gathering and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production operations
  • Write high-quality, well-tested code and participate in code reviews to maintain a high engineering bar across the team
  • Contribute to system architecture by authoring and reviewing design documents, identifying trade-offs, and proposing solutions to complex technical problems
  • Improve operational excellence by building monitoring, alarming, and automation tooling; participate in on-call rotations and drive root cause analysis for operational events
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other AWS IoT teams to deliver integrated customer experiences
  • Mentor and support fellow engineers through knowledge sharing, design discussions, and constructive code reviews
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, developer productivity, and system efficiency, including leveraging AI to automate workflows, enhance testing, and accelerate delivery

A day in the life

You'll spend focused time writing code — building new APIs, tuning system performance to reduce latency at billion-device scale, or improving provisioning workflows. You'll collaborate with teammates through design reviews and code reviews, and partner with other IoT Core teams on cross-cutting features. Some days you'll dig into customer escalations, tracing issues through logs and metrics. Other days you'll experiment with AI tools to improve engineering processes. No two days are the same, but every day you're building the foundation that enables billions of devices to connect to AWS IoT.

The Identity and Registry team owns the foundational services at the core of AWS IoT — device identity, registry, shadow, and provisioning. We build and operate systems that enable billions of devices to securely connect, be managed, and interact with the cloud. Our team values operational excellence, customer obsession, and a strong ownership culture where every engineer has a direct impact. We're a collaborative group that enjoys tackling hard distributed systems problems together, and we're committed to growing each other through mentorship and open technical debate. We're looking for builders who are excited to work at IoT scale.
