What You Will Be Doing

At ChargePoint, we are building the fueling network of the future, and our Solutions Engineering team is at the center of our most strategic enterprise projects. As the Senior Director of Solutions Engineering, you will serve as the strategic bridge between enterprise clients, sales, and product engineering to deliver customized, large-scale EV charging solutions. You will empower and scale a high-performing technical team to design complex system architectures, ensuring our commercial and fleet customers seamlessly transition to electric mobility. This is a leadership role where your technical vision, commercial acumen, and strategic execution will directly impact our revenue growth and global sustainability goals.

In this strategic leadership position, you will manage, scale, and mentor a team of Solutions Engineers driving technical pre-sales and architecture design across critical markets. Your day-to-day will involve overseeing in-depth technical feasibility studies, shaping deployment strategies for complex charging networks, and partnering closely with executive sales leadership to close high-stakes enterprise deals. You will act as a key advisor to both our largest customers and our internal engineering teams, identifying market trends and technical requirements that shape our hardware and software roadmaps. Success in your first 6 to 12 months means establishing highly scalable pre-sales playbooks, optimizing technical discovery frameworks, and flawlessly executing technical handoffs to accelerate the adoption of ChargePoint’s solutions.

What You Will Bring to ChargePoint

  • Lead and Scale: Hire, train, and mentor a high-performing team of Solutions Engineers, guiding them through complex sales cycles, customer discovery, and enterprise-grade technical scoping.
  • Architect Solutions: Own the technical enablement and solution design phase, ensuring proposed EV charging hardware, software platforms, energy management systems (EMS) and maintenance/ warranty services perfectly align with customer site constraints and business goals.
  • Charge Together: Partner collaboratively across Sales, Product Management, Firmware/Software Engineering, and Customer Success to translate market signals and customer feedback into actionable product roadmaps.
  • Drive Feasibility: Oversee comprehensive technical feasibility studies, load-capacity evaluations, and utility interconnection reviews for large-scale depot and public charging hubs.
  • Innovate Systems: Drive system and grid architecture design, ensuring seamless integrations utilizing standard industry protocols including OCPP and OCPI.
  • Engage Executives: Lead high-stakes technical presentations, Proof of Concepts (POCs), and comprehensive RFP responses with commercial fleets, real estate developers, and municipal transit authorities.
  • Optimize Operations: Establish and refine scalable pre-sales playbooks, technical discovery frameworks, and standard documentation to shorten sales cycles and dramatically improve win rates.
  • Align Strategy: Partner directly with the SVP of Sales to align technical pre-sales strategies with overarching regional revenue goals and market expansion targets.
  • Navigate Complexity: Act as a senior technical escalation point for critical enterprise accounts, directly negotiating and resolving complex engineering and deployment challenges during the sales process.
  • Foster Expertise: Champion continuous learning within the team, maintaining a cutting-edge understanding of the rapidly evolving EV infrastructure landscape, microgrid technologies, and energy storage advancements.

Requirements

  • 8 - 12 years of total engineering or technical pre-sales experience, with a proven track record of supporting complex enterprise sales cycles and large-scale hardware/software deployments.
  • 3 - 5 years of direct people-management or technical leadership experience at the Manager, Director, or equivalent level.
  • Deep familiarity with EV charging infrastructure (Level 2 & DC Fast Charging), power distribution, electrical load management, and microgrids.
  • Familiarity with large-scale, grid-connected electrical equipment, such as medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, inverters and utility service equipment.
  • Strong working knowledge of industry standards and communication protocols such as OCPP, OCPI, and smart grid integrations.
  • Exceptional capability to translate complex engineering details for executive buyers while maintaining deep technical credibility with software developers, utility engineers, and facility managers.
  • Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration (MBA), or a related field.
  • Prior experience scaling technical pre-sales or solutions engineering teams specifically within the EV, renewable energy, or clean tech industries.
  • Established relationships with major utilities (e.g., PG&E), municipal transit authorities, or large-scale commercial real estate developers
